Do Our Inner Stories Create Our Perceptions?

Sunday, December 16, 2012
The symbolic world is the language of the Universe. So words often do not convey the essence of truth. Our perceptions create our inner stories, which in turn create the directions of our lives. Spirals, triangles, circles, squares, and crosses evoke feelings of connectedness that seems universal among humans throughout history. Different cultures, arts and designs tell us their stories through the symbolic world. Fractals are a good example of how many discover a new aesthetic blending of art, science and nature.
I believe that one of the reasons that our systems and institutions are struggling on this planet is because people are evolving to new levels. They need different perspectives, different and open techniques to discover the world around them. People of all ages deserve to be validated as human beings. Their stories are weaving the 21st Century's history, and as a society we must make the shift necessary to help our searching minds and hearts.

A good example of this is one of my favorite stories was written by biologist Lyall Watson in his book Lifetide: The Biology of Consciousness and then popularized in
Ken Keyes book The Hundredth Monkey. As the story goes a group of scientists were studying the behavior of local monkeys on the island of Koshima near Japan in 1952. This group of Mucaca fuscats monkeys would eat the sweet potatoes that the scientists dropped in the san daily for them. One young female monkey, who the scientists called Imo, learned to wash the potatoes before eating them. She taught her monkey friends and family to wash their potatoes too. Pretty soon many of the monkeys were imitating Imo's food washing behavior. The scientists observed this with interest, watching how the behavior slowly spread through the tribe, until one day something startling happened - every monkey in the tribe began washing their food. The scientists reported their observations - at the same time that another group of scientists at Takaskeyana on the district mainland had noticed an odd and eerie phenomenon: suddenly all the Macaca fuscata monkeys they were observing had begun to wash their food in the ocean with no physical connection to Imo or the original band of monkeys. This story is one of my inner stories that guide my perceptions of the amazing Universe. There is so much we don't know. My inner story is a belief in the Hundredth Monkey theory. This theory is that once a percentage of any species learn something there is a quantum leap in learning for the entire group. My story is that our human family is on the way to wisdom, compassion, and more enlightenment.
A major shift is occurring, not just on our planet, but within the human psyche. Mysteries are cropping up all over the place. Questions are being asked and answers are being sought. For centuries science has tried to be disconnected from the spiritual realm. It would seem, however, that many scientists are making discoveries that confirm what the mystics knew for centuries. Dr. Candice Pert, author of Molecules of Emotion discovered that our cells, respond to our emotions everywhere in the body. Dr. Pert is one of the many scientists who are exploring the mind, body and spirit connection. Her research has shown clearly that cells at the most minute levels communicate with each other. They vibrate to a different frequencies and will start to vibrate together over a period of time, depending on the actions of other cells around them. The cells seem to have intelligence at all levels within the body.
This aspect of Dr. Pert's work fascinates me. For years I have been intrigued by the theories around the connection between the microcosm and macrocosm. Is it possible that the symbolic world is guiding us at a cellular level? The symbolic world is a rich resource for us. There are system that have been used throughout history. Although some look upon tarot decks, runes and the I Ching with suspicion, these tools allow us to use and develop our own intuition. Prayer beads, prayer wheels, mantras, rosary beads, crosses and mandalas are all tools to allow us to connect with our spiritual essence.
Is is possible that by creating powerful, life affirming inner stories we vibrate together at a higher connected frequency? Mystics throughout time have told us we are all connected, that we are one. As an author, Reiki master, teacher and life coach I interact with people from all walks of life and it amazes me how strong their sense of urgency seems to be to discover their life path or heal the one they are on. I believe the stories we tell ourselves consistently have enormous power to heal and transform our lives.
