Top 10 Myths About College Life

Monday, December 5, 2011

College will be the best time of your life. You will venture out of your shell, learn more, will explore greater opportunities and change. However many students receive a lot of advice that is not very useful before they enter their undergrad. Many see it as a party central and many just envision four years of gloom and doom.

Most incoming college freshmen have assumptions about what student life will be like at school. While some ideas are true — the cafeteria food probably isn’t prepared by gourmet chefs and your dorm room likely won’t have a Jacuzzi — other assumptions can make you feel “different” or as if you don’t measure up. Freshman year is a maze of possibilities,
so don’t let these myths about student life get you down.
Myth #1 - Life at college is constant party.
A lot of people may think that college is one big party all of the time; however, this is not always the case. At times there may be nothing going on and things can get quite dull and boring but you have to try to make the best of it. If you really want to succeed in college then keep partying to a minimum. You booze you loose!
Myth #2 - The freshman 15

It’s true that you will gain weight in the first semester of university. But not 15 pounds as the freshman 15 goes. Stress does cause overeating as well as homesickness and depression.  However most cafeterias put nutrition facts on all the food and have workout facilities, plus you walk everywhere you go. As long as you’re careful, eat regular meals, and make sure you aren’t ordering out pizza every night at 3 a.m., you can avoid weight gain.
Myth #3 - You won’t have friends with joining a sorority or fraternity
While the Greek life is a fun experience it’s not the only way to socialize. Join a club or do activities that you normally love and friends are sure to follow. Greeks sometimes also place pressure on students and many end up doing things that they are uncomfortable with. So make friends who you feel will enable you to be yourself and enjoy your undergrad years.
Myth #4 - Everyone’s college experience is the same
Not everyone has the same experiences. Who you are at the beginning of your freshman year is not who you will be at the end of your senior year. Everyone changes and  goes through a transition that help  shape their lives  and give them a direction  before they head out to the real world.
Myth #5 - College is only four  years
This is wrong on two fronts:  You can’t trade in your degree for another one if you didn’t go to the best college for you the first time. Your college is with you for life and only about one of five students completes college in four years. In fact, only two of five students complete college in six years. If you plan to be out of college in four years, learn what each college’s four year graduation rate is.
Myth #6 - Professors will be the bane of  your life
Sometimes it will feel like professors are cranky old sores out to get you. However develop a greater interest and just watch your grades soar. If you show that you actually care and put in effort, a lot of times you will see that they are willing to help you and they care as well. Going to their office hours is a way to build a relationship with them and show them that you are interested in doing well. However, don’t expect sympathy when you slack off all semester long and beg for grades you didn’t earn nor deserve.
Myth #7 - Your major determines your entire career.
This is definitely not true. Majors are taught alongside other courses it is the learning that I important  not the subjects.  Your major does not always dictate your future. Many people go to college and major in one thing and then do something completely different with their life .You are not always limited career-wise by what you studied in undergrad. However sticking to your major does make you more focused
Myth #8 - Cafeteria food will suck
This is a giant myth. Lol. University is not high school which is renowned for crappy cafeteria service. You get more options rather than sticking to meatball Monday and taco Tuesday. Many cater to vegans and vegetarians and have a vast menu that changes daily
Myth #9 - You will be broke all the time
Well most of the time anyways! Just kidding! Although  its true the cash supply is not endless and you are generally living on beans and toast  but mostly there are no utility expenses or grocery shopping  so money is saved as well. Plus many retailers offer students discounts on products and services a well.
Myth #10 - Every single person is hooked up
72% of college students are single as freshman. Relationships may develop later but not everyone is having sex. Many college going students are in fact virgins. Don’t fall into the pressure and get hooked up with someone you regret later. Remember you will be attached to that person for the next four years and there is no escaping especially if your one hall away from each other.
