2010 has seen several improvements and
huge leaps forward in technology. Things that were mere possibilities,
even dreams, just a year or two ago have been realized, leaving
technology enthusiasts yearning or more. Following is a list of the top
ten electronic gadgets of the year, as selected by Time.
iPhone 4
Apple sold a whopping 1.7 million units
of the latest addition to its eminent smartphone series in the first 3
days after its launch. iPhone’s 960×640 pixel “Retina Display” is a true
treat for the eyes while its new video call feature, FaceTime, makes
the superphone a huge step ahead in mobile technology.
Toshiba Libretto Dual-Screen Laptop
Toshiba’s new and innovative
“ultramobile concept PC” features dual 7-inch multi-touch screens that
“let you navigate, type, click and browse any way you like”. In addition
to conventional use, the laptop can be used vertically for better
viewing of e-books.
iPad
With 3 million units sold in the first
month after launch, the Apple iPad took the tech world by storm, marking
its place at the top of touchscreen tablets. The multi-touch screen tablet has a 9.7-inch, 1024×768 LED backlit LCD with IPS (In-Plane Switching) display technology that gives it wider viewing angles.
Samsung Galaxy S
This light-weight, slim new member of the Samsung Galaxy series is inarguably one of the best Android
phones to date. Among its many notable perks is its “eyegasmic” super
AMOLED display that provides the user with the sharpest and brightest
viewing while leeching much less power than the conventional LCD.
Kinect
Kinect might very well be the next
sheriff in motion-gaming town. Microsoft reported 2.5 million Kinect
units sold in the first 25 days of availability. The Xbox 360 add-on is a
“controller-free gaming and entertainment experience” where, instead of
a handheld device, gestures and voice commands are used to play the
game.
11-Inch MacBook Air
The saying, “good things come in small
packages” holds true for this powerful-yet-handy Apple product. At 1 kg
and 11.6 inches, this slim and speedy notebook is the most portable of
Apple’s ultraportable Macintosh notebook series.
Nexus One
Google’s Android spearhead receives
direct software updates from Google before any other Android phone on
the market. The Nexus One Android “superphone” has a speedy 1-GHz
Qualcomm Snapdragon processor along with dual noise cancellation
microphones and a vibrant AMOLED display.
Logitech Revue with Google TV
With the launch of Google TV it seems
the time is near when the internet will be able replace cable
subscriptions. The Logitech Revue TV box with Google TV sits in between
your TV and cable box, making it possible to browse through the web,
stream videos, search for your favorite shows over the internet or
cable/satellite service.
Apple TV
Apple’s revamped media-streaming TV box
allows its users to login into their Netflix accounts to rent their
favorite TV shows and movies in HD or tune to YouTube to stream videos
onto their TVs.
Nook Color
The successor of Barnes & Noble’s
first Android-powered e-reader has a 7-inch multi-touch screen and a
1024×600 IPS color display. Nook’s transition from E-Ink to IPS color,
along with the launch of its own app-store scheduled for the first
quarter of 2011, is likely to make it a big player in the e-reader
market.
