2010 has been a colorful year,
particularly for the pop genre. Several new-entries made it to the
charts this year, adding to the vast variety of hits to choose from, and
making this one tough list to compile. But hey – anything for the
readers. So here it is: our list of the top songs of 2010 based on chart
performances, Grammy nominations and over all popularity. A link to
each song is provided at the end of every description.
California Gurls – Katy Perry Feat. Snoop Dogg
“California Gurls” spread like wildfire through pop music
fans all around the world, owing in part to “Daisy Dukes, bikinis on
top”. The funky beach-ballad retained the top slot on the Billboard Hot
100 for six weeks in a row and topped the charts in several countries.[Listen]
F**k You! – Cee Lo Green
Cee Lo Green’s hit 2010 pop single can
adequately described as smart, catchy & funny, the humor, of course,
lying in the contrast between the foul lyrics and docile mood of the
song. The song has earned Record of the Year and Song of the Year nominations for the 53rd Grammy Awards to be held in 2011. It has a couple of remixes, one of which features 50 Cent. [Listen]
Nothin’ on You – B.o.B Feat. Bruno Mars
2010 saw the debut of singer and record
producer Bobby Ray Simmons Jr. with “Nothin’ on You”, a soft and sweet
hip-hop track featuring Bruno Mars (Peter Gene Hernandez). The song has
been nominated for Record of the Year along with two other Grammys for the upcoming Grammy Awards. [Listen]
Love the Way You Lie – Eminem Feat. Rihanna
“Love the Way You Lie” is an example of
the class of music produced when two of the best in their respective
genres form a duo. The song structure is somewhat resembles that of
“Airplanes” by B.o.B – an engaging rap bout followed by a contrasting,
soft chorus. The song topped the charts in over 20 countries. [Listen]
Baby – Justin Bieber Feat. Ludacris
YouTuber turned pop and R&B star,
Justin Bieber exhibited much growth as a singer this year, with what
might be his best single yet. The track landed a place in the top ten
charts of several countries around the globe and in July of this year,
‘Baby’ became the most viewed YouTube video of all time. The video
currently has over 407 million views! [Listen]
Airplanes – B.o.B Feat. Hayley Williams
“Airplanes” starts with a soft piano
riff overlapped by the voice of Hayley Williams of Paramore, breaking
into a simple but gripping chorus contrasted by a spell of rap. The
success of Bobby’s hip-hop single led to a sequel (Airplanes II)
featuring Eminem in addition to Hayley Williams. Airplanes II has been
nominated for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for the upcoming Grammy Awards. [Listen]
Bad Romance – Lady GaGa
Although released in October of 2009,
the hit single that made people go “Gaga, ooh la la!” last year,
continued to maintain much of its popularity throughout 2010 and cashed
in on its critical acclaim by earning Lady GaGa a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. [Listen]
Not Afraid – Eminem
2010 saw a new Eminem with the release of the stimulating rap single, “Not Afraid”. The single has been nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Solo Rap Performance for the 53rd Grammy Award scheduled for the first quarter of 2011. [Listen]
Just the Way You Are – Bruno Mars
2010 debutant, Bruno Mars (Peter Gene
Hernandez) took to the charts with his soft single “Just the Way You
Are”. After retaining its position on the Billboard pop chart for 20
weeks and counting, the song snagged a well-deserved Grammy nomination

Like a G6 – Far East Movements
This mood and melody of this catchy,
fast-paced electro-hop track fits very well with its lyrics – pour
enough booze down your gullet and you’ll be flying like a jet. The song
remained on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks straight,
