An internet meme or phenomenon is a
cultural item, idea, catch-phrase, video or image that is spread across
the web via various internet forums and media. Humor memes tend to
spread like an accelerated chain reaction. Not all persist, though.
The following memes, however, are 10 of the funniest the internet has to offer. Class-A LOLmemes!
Don’t Tase Me, Bro!
This internet phenomenon finds its
origin in the video of a student of University of Florida student being
forcefully removed from a Constitution Day forum by university security.
After a good deal of resistance, Andrew Meyer was finally tased, amidst
much squealing and screams of “Don’t Tase me, Bro!” [Original, Can’t Tase This (Song)]
Double Rainbow
The video of Paul Vasquez’s overreaction
to spotting a double rainbow quickly went viral when he uploaded it to
his YouTube channel. The passionate “Double Rainbow! All the way! ” has
become a widespread meme with countless mentions, spoofs and remixes. [Original, Double Rainbow Song]
Keyboard Cat
Charlie Schmidt’s Keyboard Cat, apart
from being an adorable video, is a popular internet meme. The video of
Charlie’s late pet cat, Fatso, playing a funny tune on an electronic
piano has been used innumerable times to “play off” or accentuate the
humor of a “fail” moment caught on camera. [Watch]
Hitler Rage Videos (Downfall Parodies)
The scene in Downfall that
shows a disgruntled Hitler, furious from the realization of imminent
defeat in the war, has been parodied over and over after the idea was
first introduced in a video wherein Hitler’s words were given new
meaning with funny English subtitles raging over being banned from Xbox
Live. [Watch]
LOLcats
Still taking the internet by storm, the
LOLcat image macro is a popular meme that uses photos of cats with odd
or funny captions written in grammatically incorrect English to create
humor. The style in which the captions are written is referred to as
“Kitty Pidgin” or “LOLspeak”. The meme can be traced back to allegedly
the first use of the term on 4chan.
The “O RLY?” Owl
The “O RLY?” Owl, like the lolcat meme,
is an image macro. It is a photo of an astounded white owl with an “O
RLY?” caption. The “O RLY?” response is usually used as a reply to an
overly obvious statement. It is, at times, followed by “YA RLY” and “NO
WAI!!” responses.
Rickrolling
If you’ve never been rickrolled, you’d
probably reckon the meme is a harmless old music video of Rick Astley’s
“Never Gonna Give You Up”. Rickrolling is what some would call a bad
cyber prank. You click on a “Free iPhone” or “Kardashians on the beach!”
link and it takes you to the 1987 music video and the rest is
cringefest. [Watch]
All Your Base Are Belong To Us
All Your Base Are Belong To Us, at times
abbreviated as “AYBABTU”, is a hilarious Engrish (flawed English)
internet meme. The expression comes from the intro scene of a poorly
translated (understatement) version of an old Japanese arcade game
called Zero Wing. [Watch]
Leeroy Jenkins
Leeroy Jenkins is a character created by Ben Schulz in the MMORPG, World of Warcraft
popular, or rather, notorious owing to a clip of the game that shows
him charging into battle yelling “Leeroy Jenkins!” while his guild
companions are still carefully planning the attack. The guild rushes in
to save him and is wiped out in the process amidst much complaining and
Leeroy-bashing. [Watch]
Kanye West Interrupts
The Kanye Interrupts meme set off on the
internet when at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West
interrupted Best Female Video Award winner, Taylor Swift’s speech to
tell the world that “Beyonce’s had one o’ the best videos of all time”.
Kanye’s little stunt was booed by all, even the President of the US,
Barack Obama, in this clip here. [Original, Kanye Interrupts Obama]
