2010 may not have started off as a
particularly good year for movies but the initial disappointment was
compensated by a few great titles in between and the last-quarter flurry
of quality films. The highlights of 2010 include record breaking titles
from the animated film industry and one of the highest publically rated movies of all time (Inception).

Inception
Christopher Nolan’s Inception has a long
list of well-deserved awards and nominations. In a complex, engaging
plot woven around the concept of invading, looting and altering the
subconscious mind, viewers find themselves pondering, second-guessing
and going “Whoa!” from the beginning to the very end of the film. Truly,
it is one of the very best science fiction films of the decade. IMDB rating: 9.0
Toy Story 3
The third installment in Pixar Animation
Studios’ Toy Story series is undoubtedly not only the best of the lot,
but also one of the best in animated film history. In August of 2010,
having earned over $1 billion globally, the movie became the
highest-grossing animated movie and 5th overall highest-grossing movie of all time. IMDB rating: 8.8
Black Swan
This creepy psychological thriller is
based on the rivalry between a seasoned ballet dancer and her
competition for a part in a production of Swan Lake, a tale that
symbolizes the contrast between the White and Black Swan, innocence and
sensuality. Black Swan came in December to take to the charts with
comprehensive acclaim. IMDB rating: 8.8
The Fighter
Based on the life of 1980’s professional
American boxer, “Irish” Micky Ward and his older half-brother cum
trainer Dicky Eklund, this biographical sports flick has six Golden
Globe award nominations, one of which is for Best Motion Picture
(Drama). IMDB rating: 8.4
The Social Network
The Social Network tells the story of
Mark Zuckerberg, Time’s Person of the Year 2010 and founder of the
iconic online social network that continues to connect the world and
influence online culture. The critically acclaimed movie is a fine mix
of commendable direction, great acing and a remarkable script. IMDB rating: 8.2
How to Train Your Dragon
Packed with entertaining action
sequences and witty dialogue, DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your
Dragon is the story of Hiccup, a young Viking misfit who, in pursuit of
the Viking way, aims to join the traditional Dragon-hunt, only to
befriend what would have been his first kill. In its list of numerous
nominations, the film has a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated
Feature Film. IMDB rating: 8.2
Tangled
Tangled is an amusing animated spin-off
of the famous German fairy tale, Rapunzel. With over $260 million in
expenses, the Walt Disney film has taken second place behind Pirates of
the Caribbean: At World’s End in the list of most expensive films of all time. IMDB rating: 8.2
Kick-Ass
Adapted from the Marvel comics comic
book series with the same title, Kick-ass offers a great concept nicely
coupled with an appealing plot and entertaining action sequences. The
action-comedy flick tells the story of a meek high-school student who,
inspired by comic-book superheroes, takes to the streets in green and
yellow tights to protect the helpless. IMDB rating: 8.1
Shutter Island
Based on Dennis Lehane’s bestselling
novel Shutter Island, this psychological thriller submerges viewers into
a twisted mystery surrounding the protagonist (DiCaprio) and an
islanded facility for the mentally unstable. IMDB rating: 8.0
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
The first half of the last title in the
Harry Potter movie saga may be the best one yet. The movie has been
nominated for several awards owing to improved cinematography and
impressive visual effects. Part 2 of the movie is scheduled for release
in mid-July, 2011. IMDB rating: 7.9
