Fortune 500 is an annual list compiled
and published by Fortune Magazine ranking the Unites States’ 500 largest
private and public corporations on the basis of their gross revenue.
The first Fortune 500 list was published in 1955.
Following are the the names of the ten largest Fortune 500 corporations for the year of 2011.
Walmart
Walmart is a multinational corporation
that runs some 8500 large discount department stores and warehouse
stores in 15 countries. It was founded 1962 by Sam Walton and has been
headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas since.
ExxonMobil
ExxonMobil is a multinational oil and
gas corporation which was formed in 1999 with the merger of Exxon and
Mobil. It is a direct offspring of of John Reckefeller’s Standard Oil
company whose headquarters are in Irving, Texas. ExxonMobil is the
largest of the world’s six ‘supermajor’ oil companies.
Chevron
Chevron is a multinational energy
corporation that is involved in every aspect of the oil, gas, and
geothermal energy industries, including exploration and production,
refining, marketing and transport and power generation in more than 180
countries. It is currently headquartered in San Ramon, California. It is
also amongst the world’s six ‘supermajor’ oil companies.
ConocoPhillips
ConocoPhillips is a multinational
corporation headquartered in the ‘Energy Corridor’ district of Houston,
Texas. It was formed in 2002 with the merger of Conoco Inc and Phillips
Petroleum Company. ConocoPhillips too is one f the world’s six
‘supermajor’ oil companies.
Fannie Mae
The Federal National Mortgage
Association or Fannie Mae is a government-sponsored enterprise formed in
1938 with the purpose of the purpose of expanding the secondary
mortgage market.
General Electric
General Electric is a multinational
conglomerate corporation that operates through fives segments i.e
Energy, Technology Infrastructure, NBC Universal, Capital Finance and
Consumer & Industrial. It is incorporated in Schenectady, New
York and headquartered in Fairfield, Connecticut.
Berkshire Hathaway
Berkshire Hathaway is a conglomerate
holding company that oversees and manages a number of subsidiary
companies. It owns a diverse range of businesses including railroads,
confectionery, retail, home furnishings, encyclopedias, manufacture of
vacuum cleaners, jewelry sales, newspaper publishing, manufacture and
distribution of uniforms, as well as several regional electric and gas
utilities. Berkshire Hathaway is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska.
General Motors
General Motors is a multinational
automotive company which was founded in 1908. It produces cars and
trucks in 31 countries and sells these vehicles through the following
brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Opel, Vauxhall and Holden. General
Motors is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan and is the second largest
automaker in the world after Toyota.
Bank of America
Bank of America is a global financial
services company which was formed in 1928. It is the second largest bank
holding in the United States and one of the ‘Big Four’ banks of the
United States with 5900 banking centers and 18000 ATMs, serving client
in over 150 countries.
Ford Motor
Ford Motor Company is a multinational
automaker founded by Henry Ford in 1903. It is the second largest
automaker in the US after General Motors and the fifth largest automaker
in the world.
